"The five S’s of sports training are: stamina, speed, strength, skill, and spirit; but the greatest of these is spirit." - Ken Doherty

At Orchid Vale, we aim to provide a curriculum that allows all pupils to access high quality PE that develops their health, fitness and wellbeing.

We aim for all children to experience a wide variety of sports and physical skills which will enhance life-long fitness and life choices. PE can challenge and promote self-esteem through the development of physical confidence and problem solving. It can teach children to cope with both success and failure in competitive, individual and team based physical activities. Our school values of kindness, respect, resilience, friendship, responsibility and courage are embedded within our PE curriculum

If children develop enthusiasm for physical activity at a young age – it will have a lifelong impact on their physical and mental well-being.

What the children think ...

I like this subject because I’m into sports such as football, basketball, dodge ball and many others.

I enjoy PE because I like getting more fit and it is also let us get some more fresh air then we would get at home.

Personally, I think that the PE in Orchid Vale is very good as there is lots of different exercises and it keeps us fit during the week.

I like the challenge we are given in PE.

PE in Action

What does PE lead to?

PE leads to a variety of jobs in the future, including:

  • Sports science.
  • PE teacher.
  • Physiotherapist.
  • Professional sportsperson.
  • Sports coach/consultant.
  • Sports policy at local and national level.
  • Diet and fitness instructor.
  • Personal trainer.

Curriculum Implementation

Children receive regular, challenging physical activity throughout their time at school.

P.E. is taught through two weekly lessons – one outdoors and one indoors.

Lessons are planned using Real P.E. – a progressive scheme that starts with developing fundamental skills that enable children to access the full physical curriculum.

Children are taught both individual and collaborative skills through a range of team games and skills-based drills. Throughout their primary career, they are introduced to a range of team games, making connections between them through discussion and development of strategy and tactics.

Children are taught units of work that include team games, fitness skills, dance, gymnastics, swimming and outdoor and adventurous activities.  Through all of these units, pupils are encouraged to develop communication and collaboration skills.

Children go swimming in Year 3 and 5, with catch up sessions during Year 6 if pupils haven’t been able to swim 25 metres.

Children are encouraged to take part in extra-curricular activities.

There are many opportunities throughout the year for children of all abilities to represent the school in inter school competition.

Joy of Moving

We know that it can be difficult for children to stay active
during the winter months and now even more so, given the
challenging times with current restrictions. So we want to
help families and their children get active whilst having fun,
right from the comfort of their own homes!
